Bad news bears

February 4, 2007

Thank goodness this NFL season is over, especially these playoffs. Except for the Saints’ lone victory, every other playoff team I rooted for lost. Man, I hope this soggy game ends that crappy streak!

Oh, well. Next year.

I also must admit that when the Bears starting resembling the Cowboys, i.e., a team trying to survive without a real quarterback, I quit paying much attention, so I missed the TV ads. But from what I did see, I don’t think that’s necessarily bad.

My favorite national ad: Dave and Oprah. I really can see them as a couple. OK, maybe not. If you didn’t catch it, too bad. Since it was a CBS ad, it’s not included in this collection of XLI ads.

My favorite local one: Emmitt walking "Saturday Night Fever" style through an H.E.B. grocery store. OK, it’s not the best in the world, but at least there was a Cowboys connection in this year’s game. That and the announcement Saturday of Michael’s election to the Hall of Fame.

Now, only six months until training camp and we get to start counting down to XLII. Wish me better luck this coming season and post-season!

Hello Tax Season 2026

Happy New Tax Year! Are you ready to file your 2025 tax return? I know, too early to ask. But Tax Day 2026 will be here before we realize it. The Internal Revenue Service deadline to file and pay any tax we owe is the regular April 15 date this year. It’s also Tax Day for most of the states that collect income taxes from their residents, which is most of the states! If that seems too far away right now, don’t worry. As is the case every tax season, the ol’ blog’s tips and other tax reminders should help all of us meet our state and federal responsibilities. Procrastinators also will want to keep an eye on the countdown clock just below. It tracks how much time we have until April’s Tax Day, just in case we put off our annual tax task until the absolutely final hours and decide we need to instead get an extension request into the IRS by that date. (Note: I’m in the Central Time Zone, so adjust accordingly for where you live.)

  • I’d forgotten about the Oprah and Dave commercial. They have a famous rivalry, or a feud, or something. Our local ads were wretched.
My Super Bowl was two weeks go when the Patriots lost. Great times.
On the whole the commercials were a little disappointing, I have to say. And really, after the first half, the game was pretty disappointing.
