You can find an ongoing collection of Tax Tips by clicking that linked phrase. That will bring up on your screen all the posts tagged with that designation, with the most recent item at the top.

Then there are the special Tax Tip collections.

Certain tax tips get special attention. Over the years, their display has taken various forms and followed assorted time tables. The bottom line is that these tips are highlighted in the upper right corner of the ol’ blog, both on the main home page and on each separate post page.

During the main tax filing season, which typically runs from January through the mid-April filing deadline, the Tax Tips tend to focus on how to file your annual Form 1040 correctly and quickly.

After the filing due date, the tips morph into pieces of advice on how to reduce your coming tax bill.

Most tips focus on federal tax returns, but some state tips also find their way into the spotlight now and then.

If you miss one of the tips when it is featured at the top of the page, don’t worry. You can always check them out at the links below.

Hello Tax Season 2026

Happy New Tax Year! Are you ready to file your 2025 tax return? I know, too early to ask. But Tax Day 2026 will be here before we realize it. The Internal Revenue Service deadline to file and pay any tax we owe is the regular April 15 date this year. It’s also Tax Day for most of the states that collect income taxes from their residents, which is most of the states! If that seems too far away right now, don’t worry. As is the case every tax season, the ol’ blog’s tips and other tax reminders should help all of us meet our state and federal responsibilities. Procrastinators also will want to keep an eye on the countdown clock just below. It tracks how much time we have until April’s Tax Day, just in case we put off our annual tax task until the absolutely final hours and decide we need to instead get an extension request into the IRS by that date. (Note: I’m in the Central Time Zone, so adjust accordingly for where you live.)
