A sweet fried salute to our military on Doughnut Day

June 3, 2016

Giphy (4)Happy National Doughnut Day!

If you live near a military facility, consider dropping a box of the sweet fried treats off there for the enlisted men and women. Or take some to your local veterans' meeting hall.

This isn't, a la some politicians who will remain nameless (but linked to!), a blog version of pandering to patriotism.

Doughnuts actually are inextricably linked to our armed services.

Last year, National Doughnut Day fell on June 6, D-Day.

As I noted in my post then, Salvation Army officers who went to Europe during World War I to comfort U.S. troops did so in part by bringing the doughboys freshly-made doughnuts.

The Salvation Army reprised its doughnut serving duties during World War II.

Doughnuts at home: National Doughnut Day within the United States today is more commercially skewed. Many popular doughnut, or donut, chains nationwide are offering a free fried dough treat, usually if you buy a beverage, too.

I know most of you probably had your pastry this morning, but if a lunch or coffee break piece of pastry appeals to you, USA Today has details on free doughnut deals at Dunkin' Donuts, Krispy Kreme and other doughnut shops across the country. Other places to get free doughnuts today also can be found in Money's list.

Enjoy. And consider sharing the day with military personnel by making your own literal doughnation or a donation to nonprofits that support our men and women in uniform.

Hello Tax Season 2026

Happy New Tax Year! Are you ready to file your 2025 tax return? I know, too early to ask. But Tax Day 2026 will be here before we realize it. The Internal Revenue Service deadline to file and pay any tax we owe is the regular April 15 date this year. It’s also Tax Day for most of the states that collect income taxes from their residents, which is most of the states! If that seems too far away right now, don’t worry. As is the case every tax season, the ol’ blog’s tips and other tax reminders should help all of us meet our state and federal responsibilities. Procrastinators also will want to keep an eye on the countdown clock just below. It tracks how much time we have until April’s Tax Day, just in case we put off our annual tax task until the absolutely final hours and decide we need to instead get an extension request into the IRS by that date. (Note: I’m in the Central Time Zone, so adjust accordingly for where you live.)
