Refund money going, going, gone next week

April 15, 2007

A quick reminder for all you folks who are three years late with your 2003 returns. If you didn’t file back in April 2004 and you were due a refund, the U.S. Treasury will get to keep your tax cash if you don’t get that old 1040 in by April 17.

This story has details on the unclaimed money; this one shows the amounts left in Uncle Sam’s account by residents of each state.

And if you’re that nonchalant about money, drop me a note. I can give you my PayPal account so you can send any more cash that you don’t want my way.

Hello Tax Season 2026

Happy New Tax Year! Are you ready to file your 2025 tax return? I know, too early to ask. But Tax Day 2026 will be here before we realize it. The Internal Revenue Service deadline to file and pay any tax we owe is the regular April 15 date this year. It’s also Tax Day for most of the states that collect income taxes from their residents, which is most of the states! If that seems too far away right now, don’t worry. As is the case every tax season, the ol’ blog’s tips and other tax reminders should help all of us meet our state and federal responsibilities. Procrastinators also will want to keep an eye on the countdown clock just below. It tracks how much time we have until April’s Tax Day, just in case we put off our annual tax task until the absolutely final hours and decide we need to instead get an extension request into the IRS by that date. (Note: I’m in the Central Time Zone, so adjust accordingly for where you live.)

  • I’ve got a guy who, for being too cheap to pay $89 for his tax return, is going to forfeit about $900 in refund. I don’t see how that would possibly make sense, but whatever. Maybe he’ll wise up before the 2004 return expires.
Oh, I saw your article on bankrate about misconceptions of homeownership today. Reminded me that I’m neglecting my blog due to tax insanity! Luckily that will all be over in about 24 hours. 🙂
    Hope you’re doing well!
