Not in the Lone Star State? IRS also looking to add personnel in Ogden, Utah; Kansas City, Missouri; and Puerto Rico.

Looking for a job with the Internal Revenue Service? Good news. The tax agency, which earlier announced plans to fill 10,000 staff positions, is hiring.

And it’s starting in my backyard.

The IRS has more than 900 open slots at its Austin, Texas, processing center. To get folks at these jobs as soon as possible, the agency is holding an In-Person Direct Hiring Event, its version of a job fair, on Wednesday, May 11, and Thursday, May 12.

Specifically, the IRS is looking for clerks and tax examining technicians to work out of its Austin campus. Click on each of the preceding position name links for details from USAJobs.gov on what the work entails.

During the event, IRS interviewers will be reviewing resumés and qualifying applicants on-the-spot. The is using a special expedited hiring process, called direct-hire authority, which could get new hires into the Lone Star State office within 45 to 60 days of a job offer.

Training, benefits part of the package: Interested, but not a tax expert? No worries.

The IRS says most positions are entry-level and do not require prior tax expertise. Uncle Sam will provide on-the-job training. Plus, notes the IRS, there are opportunities for advancement.

Worried that lower-level jobs won’t pay enough?

The IRS also says it offers competitive pay. Applicants also may receive a recruitment incentive that requires a one-year service agreement.

And there are workplace benefits, such as paid vacations and paid sick days.

Registration and attendance: OK, your employment concerns are alleviated and you’re ready to apply. Now it’s time to get your resumé and interview attire in order for this week’s in-person event.

While the hiring sessions are open to the public, the IRS says it’s also a good idea to register for an interview slot. The event will run from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on each day. You can sign up for a specific time on either May 11 (click “select a time” button on the right) or May 12 (click the “register” button on the right).

Once you’ve got an appointment, gather your application materials.

You’ll need to bring your resumé and two forms of identification. Acceptable ID documents include a driver’s license and/or state-issued identification card, birth certificate, U.S. passport, military ID card, or Social Security card.

Then map out your route to the event. It will be at the IRS building at South Park Office Complex, and the address you need to plug into your online mapping app is 5015 South Interstate Highway 35, Austin, Texas 78744.

If you’re an old-school navigator, the IRS says there will be signs with directions and instructions.

More jobs in more IRS locations: If you’d like an IRS job, but don’t live in or plan to move to Austin, you still might get an employment chance.

The IRS also will hold similar hiring events later in May and in June. They include:

  • Fort Buchanan, Puerto Rico, job fair for contact representative positions, on May 17 and 18. Here, the IRS is looking for bilingual service personnel veterans and military spouses to fill the open jobs.
  • Ogden, Utah, IRS Service Center direct hiring event for clerk and tax examiner positions, on May 25 and 26. This is the IRS’ Beehive State event along the same lines as the one this week in Austin.
  • Kansas City, Missouri, IRS Service Center direct hiring event for clerk and tax examiner positions, on June 7 and 8. Again, the IRS is hoping Show Me State and nearby neighbors will show up to fill the clerk and tax examiner slots there.

The IRS’ career events web page has more on each of these hiring sessions.

Hello Tax Season 2026

Happy New Tax Year! Are you ready to file your 2025 tax return? I know, too early to ask. But Tax Day 2026 will be here before we realize it. The Internal Revenue Service deadline to file and pay any tax we owe is the regular April 15 date this year. It’s also Tax Day for most of the states that collect income taxes from their residents, which is most of the states! If that seems too far away right now, don’t worry. As is the case every tax season, the ol’ blog’s tips and other tax reminders should help all of us meet our state and federal responsibilities. Procrastinators also will want to keep an eye on the countdown clock just below. It tracks how much time we have until April’s Tax Day, just in case we put off our annual tax task until the absolutely final hours and decide we need to instead get an extension request into the IRS by that date. (Note: I’m in the Central Time Zone, so adjust accordingly for where you live.)
