IRS open house Saturday, June 5

June 4, 2010

The IRS is holding its second Open House of 2010 tomorrow, Saturday, June 5.

Approximately 200 IRS offices, at least one in every state, will be open from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. local time tomorrow. IRS staff will be available during those hours, either on site or by telephone (click on your state for office info), to help taxpayers work through problems and come up with solutions.

If you recently received a notice from the agency, IRS offices tomorrow are where you can find out exactly what that tax-speak mailing means and how you can deal with it.

In addition to notice questions, IRS Commissioner Doug Shulman says folks who have a problem paying their taxes or are experiencing difficulty resolving a tax issue should stop by an open house location or give the agency a call on Saturday.

IRS employees will be around to discuss whether an installment payment agreement is appropriate and, if so, help taxpayers fill out the paperwork. Tax staff also will provide assistance with offers-in-compromise proposals, where you and the IRS agree on a settlement amount that's less than the full amount you owe.

Taxpayers also will be able to get help for more routine tax tasks, such as completing a certain IRS form or schedule.

At previous tax open houses this year, one in March for individual filers and another in May for businesses with tax questions, the IRS says thousands of taxpayers sought agency help and most had their issues resolved the same day.

A third open house is planned for the fall. Details on that event will be announced as it nears.

Hello Tax Season 2026

Happy New Tax Year! Are you ready to file your 2025 tax return? I know, too early to ask. But Tax Day 2026 will be here before we realize it. The Internal Revenue Service deadline to file and pay any tax we owe is the regular April 15 date this year. It’s also Tax Day for most of the states that collect income taxes from their residents, which is most of the states! If that seems too far away right now, don’t worry. As is the case every tax season, the ol’ blog’s tips and other tax reminders should help all of us meet our state and federal responsibilities. Procrastinators also will want to keep an eye on the countdown clock just below. It tracks how much time we have until April’s Tax Day, just in case we put off our annual tax task until the absolutely final hours and decide we need to instead get an extension request into the IRS by that date. (Note: I’m in the Central Time Zone, so adjust accordingly for where you live.)
