Massachusetts is coming to this weekend’s sales tax holiday party, along with Georgia, Texas and Maryland

August 9, 2013

Massachusetts never RSVPs to the sales tax holiday party, but always seem to show up just in time for the celebration.

For the third straight year, Bay State lawmakers passed last-minute legislation creating a sales tax holiday. It's the ninth sales tax holiday in Massachusetts in the past 10 years.

So Massachusetts shoppers can officially head to stores on Saturday, Aug. 10, and Sunday, Aug. 11, and pick up just about anything without having to pay sales tax as long as the items don't cost more than $2,500 apiece.

Three more tax holidays on tap: Also being held, or starting, this weekend are tax holidays in Georgia, Texas and Maryland.

Georgia is going the extra mile (or more) to make it easy for shoppers to get to their favorite stores for tax-free shopping on Friday, Aug. 9, and Saturday, Aug. 10. The Peach State's special no-sales-tax treatment applies to clothing and footwear priced at $100 or less; school supplies selling for $20 or
less; and computers and computer accessories priced at $1,000 or less.

Texas' tax holiday is a week earlier this year, but the eligible purchases are essentially the same. From Friday, Aug. 9, through Sunday, Aug. 11, Lone Star State shoppers won't owe state or local sales taxes on clothing and footwear priced at less than $100; backpacks priced at less than $100; and school supplies priced at less than $100.

Maryland wraps up this coming sales tax holiday weekend by starting its week-long event. From Sunday, Aug. 11, though Saturday, Aug. 17, no state or local sales taxes will paid by Old Line State shoppers who buy qualifying apparel and footwear priced at $100 or
less.

Hello Tax Season 2026

Happy New Tax Year! Are you ready to file your 2025 tax return? I know, too early to ask. But Tax Day 2026 will be here before we realize it. The Internal Revenue Service deadline to file and pay any tax we owe is the regular April 15 date this year. It’s also Tax Day for most of the states that collect income taxes from their residents, which is most of the states! If that seems too far away right now, don’t worry. As is the case every tax season, the ol’ blog’s tips and other tax reminders should help all of us meet our state and federal responsibilities. Procrastinators also will want to keep an eye on the countdown clock just below. It tracks how much time we have until April’s Tax Day, just in case we put off our annual tax task until the absolutely final hours and decide we need to instead get an extension request into the IRS by that date. (Note: I’m in the Central Time Zone, so adjust accordingly for where you live.)
