Tax scores upset win, this time in horse race, not Congress

Remember Tax, the horse that ran in this year's Kentucky Derby? The 3-year old gelding didn't fare so well at Churchill Downs, coming in 14th.

He did better in another Triple Crown race, coming in 4th in the Belmont Stakes.

On Saturday, July 27, Tax finally notched another win.


He took the Jim Dandy in Saratoga Springs, New York. It was Tax's second career win.

The purse for the 1-and-1/8 mile race was $600,000. Bettors who picked Tax to win pocketed $11.

Horse racing, like this post, is full of numbers. However, the one that I'm picking as this weekend's By the Numbers winner is 1 in honor of Tax crossing the line in that position yesterday.

Match-up again in a month: Tax held off Tacitus, which came in second in the Belmont Stakes and third in the Kentucky Derby.

The pair is expected to face off again in about a month at the highlight of the Saratoga season, the Travers Stakes on Aug. 24.

Hello Tax Season 2026

Happy New Tax Year! Are you ready to file your 2025 tax return? I know, too early to ask. But Tax Day 2026 will be here before we realize it. The Internal Revenue Service deadline to file and pay any tax we owe is the regular April 15 date this year. It’s also Tax Day for most of the states that collect income taxes from their residents, which is most of the states! If that seems too far away right now, don’t worry. As is the case every tax season, the ol’ blog’s tips and other tax reminders should help all of us meet our state and federal responsibilities. Procrastinators also will want to keep an eye on the countdown clock just below. It tracks how much time we have until April’s Tax Day, just in case we put off our annual tax task until the absolutely final hours and decide we need to instead get an extension request into the IRS by that date. (Note: I’m in the Central Time Zone, so adjust accordingly for where you live.)

    Tacitus fell to his knees coming out of the gate, spotting the field half-dozen lengths and came within 1/2 length of catching Tax. These two will meet up again before the Breeders Cup in November.
    Tax will be around for a while, since he’s a gelding, and his owners will be paying a lot of tax for the next few years as he will be winning big purses.
