What’s Treasury Secretary Geithner’s kidney stone worth?

December 10, 2010

Timothy-geithner-treasury-secretary Treasury Secretary Tim Geithner was admitted to George Washington University Hospital in D.C. today for minor surgery.

He's having a kidney stone removed.

I'm wondering if some surgical team member might try to make some money off the results of the procedure. What would Geithner's kidney stone be worth on eBay?

Yes, I hear the collective "eeeewwwww" across the Internet. But there's precedent.

Back in 2006, actor William Shatner got $25,000 for his kidney stone. The man I prefer to think of as Capt. James T. Kirk rather than a profane social media father donated the money to Habitat for Humanity.

Not only did Shatner add to his campy Hollywood persona with the outrageous sale, but his subsequent gift of the proceeds netted him a nice charitable tax deduction.

That same year, someone sold a half-eaten dinner roll that then Harvard University head Lawrence Summers left on his plate.

Summers' leftover went for $12.50.

I wonder if it would have gone for more if the meal scavenger had held onto it until Summers was tapped by Obama to be director of the White House National Economic Council?

Hello Tax Season 2026

Happy New Tax Year! Are you ready to file your 2025 tax return? I know, too early to ask. But Tax Day 2026 will be here before we realize it. The Internal Revenue Service deadline to file and pay any tax we owe is the regular April 15 date this year. It’s also Tax Day for most of the states that collect income taxes from their residents, which is most of the states! If that seems too far away right now, don’t worry. As is the case every tax season, the ol’ blog’s tips and other tax reminders should help all of us meet our state and federal responsibilities. Procrastinators also will want to keep an eye on the countdown clock just below. It tracks how much time we have until April’s Tax Day, just in case we put off our annual tax task until the absolutely final hours and decide we need to instead get an extension request into the IRS by that date. (Note: I’m in the Central Time Zone, so adjust accordingly for where you live.)
