13 financial superstitions
for Friday the 13th

June 13, 2008

Are you scared yet? Maybe scared isn’t quite the right word. How about leery?

Some folks do suffer from paraskevidekatriaphobia, which means they are totally freaked out by Friday the 13th. And others have a definite fear of dealing with their finances.

So today is the perfect time to look at some money superstitions. With a little help from other bloggers and the magic of the IntraWeb, here are 13 financial superstitions.

From Rich Minx we learn:

1. Never give a person a wallet or purse without money in it, or they’ll always be poor.

2. If the palm of your right hand itches, you will soon be receiving some money. Don’t scratch it. If it’s your left hand, you’ll be paying out some money.

3. If your front door faces your back door it means money in, money out.

SavingAdvice.com has collected fiscal superstitions from around the world and tells us that:

4. If you put your handbag on the floor/ground you will never have money.  (Trinidad and Tobago)

5. Money attracts money, so never leave your pockets, purses or wallets
completely empty and never completely empty your bank account. Always
have at least a coin or two. (Greece)

6. Placing a piece of snake skin into your wallet will help you become
rich or find money. Snakes are a symbol of money and wealth in Japan.
If you kill a snake, you will lose your money. (Japan)

Millionster reports that:

7. Find a penny, pick it up and all day long you’ll have good luck!

8. Write with a green pen whenever you can, and profits will flow right from your hand.

9. Shooting stars are rare indeed, but if you happen to see one say “money” times three.

Personal Finance advises:

10. Always place a bill with a person’s face on it with the person’s face
facing down. If you leave the bills facing up in your wallet, they will
want to peek out and leave. But if they are facing down, the will want
to stay buried inside your wallet.

The Longest List
‘s money superstitions include:

11. If you make money on Monday, keep it and the amount will increase during the remainder of the week.

12. Wrap a penny in paper and carry it with you. This will make sure you never go broke.

And finally, from Don’t Mess With Taxes‘ money superstition list from last July, we close with the time-honored, at least in our house, New Year’s Day money tradition:

13. On Jan. 1, be sure to have greens (collard or turnip greens are my favorite, although kale will do, too, as, I suppose will spinach) and black-eyed peas to ensure prosperity for the coming year. The greens represent paper currency and the peas are for added coinage throughout the year.

As you can see, money superstitions worldwide abound. I’m sure that there are many, many more we could add to this list. Feel free to share your favorites via comments below.

And be careful out there today!

TAX-SAVVY WAYS
TO WRAP UP 2026

It’s over! With October’s extended filing deadline behind us, it is now time to focus on year-end moves to reduce your 2026 tax bill.

You’ll find ways to do just that on the Tax Tips page (see the More Tax Posts drop-down menu at the top of the blog), as well as the separate tax tip pages for each month, notably October through December. If you’re on the Tax Tips page, you’ll find a monthly list at the end of this column. If you’re on another blog page, you can head straight to the October tips; at the bottom of that tips page you’ll find links to all the other 11 months’ collections of tax advice.

Not to spoil what you’ll find in that tax advice, but it does cover such things as tax deductions for charitable donations, investment moves that could reduce tax due, and ways to max out your tax-favored retirement savings.

Finally, as the year winds down, things get hectic. There are lots of other things to occupy our time, like the much more fun upcoming holidays. But don’t lose sight of taxes, since timing is key. To be of use, most tax moves must be made by the end of the tax year. That’s Thursday, Dec. 31, which also is the last business day of the year.

So that you don’t miss that final tax year deadline, also keep an eye on the countdown clock below. It will keep you on top of just how much time is left to make important, tax-saving moves. (Note: I’m in the Central Time Zone, so adjust accordingly for where you live.)

…Give it away and your luck will stay!
I have never noticed whether either of these is true!

  • Great post! I never knew that so many money superstitions existed. This made me want to look for more.
Here are two great superstitions I found on RichMix:
If the palm of your right hand itches, you will soon be receiving some money. Don’t scratch it. If it’s your left hand, you’ll be paying out some money.
If your front door faces your back door it means money in, money out.
