When severe weather leads to major disaster declarations, the tax obligations of the residents dealing with the aftermath also are affected. The Internal Revenue Service regularly announces tax relief for those taxpayers, including later filing deadlines.

One of those delayed tax due dates is Monday, Feb. 3.

Taxpayers in 14 states and two U.S. island territories who were struck by devastating hurricanes, floods, and various other lashings from an irate Mother Nature last year were given more time to file their 2023 tax returns for which they had received an extension.

So, instead of having get their 2023 tax year 1040 forms to the IRS by Oct. 15 last year, they were given until Feb. 3, 2025.

The Feb. 3 deadline applies to taxpayers in the 16 jurisdictions listed below. The locations are linked to the official IRS notices about the tax relief.

Taxpayers on 2023 return extension in the entire states of Louisiana and Vermont, as well as all of Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands, were granted the later Feb. 3, 2025, due date.

The Feb. 3 deadline for filing extended 2023 returns also applies to filers in parts of Arizona, Connecticut, Illinois, Kentucky, Minnesota, Missouri, Montana, New York, Pennsylvania, South Dakota, Texas, and Washington state.

In addition, more taxpayers in major disaster areas last year get even more time to file. This group faces a May 1 deadline.

Hello Tax Season 2026

Happy New Tax Year! Are you ready to file your 2025 tax return? I know, too early to ask. But Tax Day 2026 will be here before we realize it. The Internal Revenue Service deadline to file and pay any tax we owe is the regular April 15 date this year. It’s also Tax Day for most of the states that collect income taxes from their residents, which is most of the states! If that seems too far away right now, don’t worry. As is the case every tax season, the ol’ blog’s tips and other tax reminders should help all of us meet our state and federal responsibilities. Procrastinators also will want to keep an eye on the countdown clock just below. It tracks how much time we have until April’s Tax Day, just in case we put off our annual tax task until the absolutely final hours and decide we need to instead get an extension request into the IRS by that date. (Note: I’m in the Central Time Zone, so adjust accordingly for where you live.)
