No day off for tax advice: March’s first weekly tip round-up

March 7, 2015

Life. It just keeps keeping on (if we're lucky!).

For most of us, our day-to-day activities fall into a predictable routine. Sometimes, though, the daily route detours.

That's what happened yesterday, as the hubby had an unexpected day off. So I took time off, too, to enjoy the down time with him … not, as he jokingly — I'm pretty sure he was joking! — said, to make sure he didn't have too much fun!

And that meant that I didn't get around to posting last week's list of Daily Tax Tips.

So, better a day late than never, is the tax advice for March 2 through March 6:

  1. Determining your tax dependents (Monday, March 2, 2015)
  2. Child and dependent care credit (Tuesday, March 3, 2015)
  3. Hobby or business? (Wednesday, March 4, 2015)
  4. Simpler home office deduction (Thursday, March 5, 2015)
  5. Avoid these 10 common tax mistakes (Friday, March 6, 2015)

These five items kick off a new monthly collection, tracked on the ol' blog's March tax tips special page.

You can check out the page if you miss an individual tax tip when it's posted each week day in the upper right corner of the ol' blog's home page, or if you, too, find yourself deviating from your daily tasks and miss an end-of-week round-up.

And if you want even more tax info, there are the January and February tax tip pages.

As for me, my life is back on schedule this Saturday. I'm making my regular visit to my mother — whom I could, as last Monday's tax tip notes, claim as a dependent if she'd let me cover some more of her expenses, but she's just too freakin' self-reliant even at age 80! — and it's time for us to run some errands.

Hello Tax Season 2026

Happy New Tax Year! Are you ready to file your 2025 tax return? I know, too early to ask. But Tax Day 2026 will be here before we realize it. The Internal Revenue Service deadline to file and pay any tax we owe is the regular April 15 date this year. It’s also Tax Day for most of the states that collect income taxes from their residents, which is most of the states! If that seems too far away right now, don’t worry. As is the case every tax season, the ol’ blog’s tips and other tax reminders should help all of us meet our state and federal responsibilities. Procrastinators also will want to keep an eye on the countdown clock just below. It tracks how much time we have until April’s Tax Day, just in case we put off our annual tax task until the absolutely final hours and decide we need to instead get an extension request into the IRS by that date. (Note: I’m in the Central Time Zone, so adjust accordingly for where you live.)
