Paying your taxes not only keeps Uncle Sam happy, it also can pay off for you.

Tax documentation is necessary in other transactions. Many loans, for example, rely on the information you provide the Internal Revenue Service when you file.

So, if you’re seeking any type of income-based fiscal help or benefit, from a mortgage or other housing assistance to educational financial aid, having your up-to-date federal tax data handy can make these transactions easier.

A long time ago in the non-digital world when the hubby and I got our first mortgage, we handed the loan officer paper copies of our IRS filings. By the time we bought our third house, electronic connections had speeded up such applications.

Now, the IRS has taken another digital step in this area. It announced today that taxpayers can download a digitally authenticated Tax Compliance Report through their personal online IRS account.

Digital tax report benefits for taxpayers: The IRS says the new tax compliance reports offers several benefits to taxpayers and those who are seeking confirmation of applicants’ financial data.

For taxpayers the IRS says the new reports offers the following benefits.

  • It provides privacy protection. Taxpayers can confirm their tax compliance by the report’s listing of filing history, balances owed and relevant issues, without disclosing unnecessary personal return information.
  • It offers broader coverage than a transcript. The digital report covers more years than a traditional tax transcript, offering a comprehensive view of a taxpayer’s filing and payment history.
  • It is easy to read. The information is provided in a way that clearly shows the taxpayer’s compliance status, either as compliant, non-compliant, or that there is a compliance issue.
  • It is available on-demand. Taxpayers can access and download their current report any time they need it through their IRS Individual Online Account.

Digital tax report benefits for lenders: The IRS says the new tax compliance reports The new digital report also has some key features, listed below, that benefit taxpayers and lenders et al who are seeking an individual’s tax compliance information.

  • It is authenticated and secure. Each tax compliance report includes an IRS-issued digital certificate that confirms its authenticity. The certificate also helps protect taxpayer information and maintains the integrity of the report.
  • It has built-in verification. Verification features are embedded directly in the downloadable file.
  • It has standardized assurance features. Each report includes the same authentication and verification elements.

These features and the information in the report should make it sufficient to meet official inquiries related to an individual’s applications for a job, a loan, a government benefit, or any other service that requires tax compliance information.

“By providing a secure, digitally authenticated report, the IRS is making it easier for taxpayers to access and share important information while protecting privacy and data integrity,” said IRS Chief Executive Officer Frank J. Bisignano in announcing the new online taxpayer account option.

Tax Season 2026 Continues!

We made it. Tax Day 2025 is finally over. For most of us. When the filing season started on Jan. 26, millions who were expecting refunds filed immediately. Most of us got our returns to the Internal Revenue Service by April 15. But plenty of taxpayers also got extensions. They are looking at an Oct. 15 filing deadline.

Those procrastinating filers aren’t a problem. In fact, the IRS appreciates taxpayers who take time to fill out their 1040 forms correctly. It also is grateful that tax submissions are spread out a bit, especially now that the IRS is a leaner agency. Processing returns is easier when they arrive throughout the year instead of in massive bunches.

But enough about Uncle Sam’s tax collection issues. The focus now is on all y’all who filed for extensions, giving you another six months to complete your return. Since your new mid-October due date will be here before you know it, let’s get started now on meeting it.

The ol’ blog is here to help you finish up your extended Form 1040. You can start with January’s tax tips page, which has links to the rest of the year’s tips by-month collections. You also can peruse various tax categories for more tailored advice by clicking on the More Tax Posts drop-down menu at the top of this (and every) page.

And to make sure you don’t miss your new filing deadline, the count-down clock below will let you know just how much time you to file by Oct. 15. At the latest.e. (Note: I’m in the Central Time Zone, so adjust accordingly for where you live.)
