Another political music, and tax, battle

April 21, 2009

Chuck DeVore, a California state assemblyman representing Orange County, is trying to unseat U.S. Senator Barbara Boxer.

As part of the effort, his campaign created a YouTube video entitled "All She Wants to Do Is Tax" to highlight DeVore's complaints about Boxer's policy positions.

As Eagles' fans have already surmised, Devore's staff set their political message to a hit song by one of the band's original members,  "All She Wants to Do is Dance."

And as campaign watchers who've seen songwriters take umbrage at the use of their compositions by candidates (for example, Heart's "Barracuda" played by McCain-Palin '08) have already surmised, Eagles' founder Don Henley is not happy.

Henley has sued DeVore in federal district court in California.

Because of the lawsuit, we no longer can watch the DeVore tax/dance version. His campaign offers their side of the issue on his campaign Web site.

Call me a cynic, but I suspect this is all going according to the conservative assemblyman's campaign plan. His staff had to know this would happen, given other recent musical/political  collisions and Henley's well known personal politics

Even without the video in play, they are enjoying the opportunity to bandy about the term "liberal" in response to Henley's lawsuit. Ain't politics grand?

If you don't care about the California Senate seat, but just want to enjoy Henley's version of his song, check out the video below, or here if it doesn't show up in your browser or RSS reader.

Hello Tax Season 2026

Happy New Tax Year! Are you ready to file your 2025 tax return? I know, too early to ask. But Tax Day 2026 will be here before we realize it. The Internal Revenue Service deadline to file and pay any tax we owe is the regular April 15 date this year. It’s also Tax Day for most of the states that collect income taxes from their residents, which is most of the states! If that seems too far away right now, don’t worry. As is the case every tax season, the ol’ blog’s tips and other tax reminders should help all of us meet our state and federal responsibilities. Procrastinators also will want to keep an eye on the countdown clock just below. It tracks how much time we have until April’s Tax Day, just in case we put off our annual tax task until the absolutely final hours and decide we need to instead get an extension request into the IRS by that date. (Note: I’m in the Central Time Zone, so adjust accordingly for where you live.)

  • Lamar,
Thanks for pointing that out. I’ve made the change in the post.

“All She Wants To Do Is Dance” is not an Eagles song. It was on Don Henley’s solo album “Building the Perfect Beast”
