for Friday the 13th

Are you scared yet? Maybe scared isn’t quite the right word. How about leery?

Some folks do suffer from paraskevidekatriaphobia, which means they are totally freaked out by Friday the 13th. And others have a definite fear of dealing with their finances.

So today is the perfect time to look at some money superstitions. With a little help from other bloggers and the magic of the IntraWeb, here are 13 financial superstitions.

From Rich Minx we learn:

1. Never give a person a wallet or purse without money in it, or they’ll always be poor.

2. If the palm of your right hand itches, you will soon be receiving some money. Don’t scratch it. If it’s your left hand, you’ll be paying out some money.

3. If your front door faces your back door it means money in, money out.

SavingAdvice.com has collected fiscal superstitions from around the world and tells us that:

4. If you put your handbag on the floor/ground you will never have money.  (Trinidad and Tobago)

5. Money attracts money, so never leave your pockets, purses or wallets
completely empty and never completely empty your bank account. Always
have at least a coin or two. (Greece)

6. Placing a piece of snake skin into your wallet will help you become
rich or find money. Snakes are a symbol of money and wealth in Japan.
If you kill a snake, you will lose your money. (Japan)

Millionster reports that:

7. Find a penny, pick it up and all day long you’ll have good luck!

8. Write with a green pen whenever you can, and profits will flow right from your hand.

9. Shooting stars are rare indeed, but if you happen to see one say “money” times three.

Personal Finance advises:

10. Always place a bill with a person’s face on it with the person’s face
facing down. If you leave the bills facing up in your wallet, they will
want to peek out and leave. But if they are facing down, the will want
to stay buried inside your wallet.

The Longest List
‘s money superstitions include:

11. If you make money on Monday, keep it and the amount will increase during the remainder of the week.

12. Wrap a penny in paper and carry it with you. This will make sure you never go broke.

And finally, from Don’t Mess With Taxesmoney superstition list from last July, we close with the time-honored, at least in our house, New Year’s Day money tradition:

13. On Jan. 1, be sure to have greens (collard or turnip greens are my favorite, although kale will do, too, as, I suppose will spinach) and black-eyed peas to ensure prosperity for the coming year. The greens represent paper currency and the peas are for added coinage throughout the year.

As you can see, money superstitions worldwide abound. I’m sure that there are many, many more we could add to this list. Feel free to share your favorites via comments below.

And be careful out there today!

Tax Season 2026 Continues!

We made it. Tax Day 2025 is finally over. For most of us. When the filing season started on Jan. 26, millions who were expecting refunds filed immediately. Most of us got our returns to the Internal Revenue Service by April 15. But plenty of taxpayers also got extensions. They are looking at an Oct. 15 filing deadline.

Those procrastinating filers aren’t a problem. In fact, the IRS appreciates taxpayers who take time to fill out their 1040 forms correctly. It also is grateful that tax submissions are spread out a bit, especially now that the IRS is a leaner agency. Processing returns is easier when they arrive throughout the year instead of in massive bunches.

But enough about Uncle Sam’s tax collection issues. The focus now is on all y’all who filed for extensions, giving you another six months to complete your return. Since your new mid-October due date will be here before you know it, let’s get started now on meeting it.

The ol’ blog is here to help you finish up your extended Form 1040. You can start with January’s tax tips page, which has links to the rest of the year’s tips by-month collections. You also can peruse various tax categories for more tailored advice by clicking on the More Tax Posts drop-down menu at the top of this (and every) page.

And to make sure you don’t miss your new filing deadline, the count-down clock below will let you know just how much time you to file by Oct. 15. At the latest.e. (Note: I’m in the Central Time Zone, so adjust accordingly for where you live.)

  • Great post! I never knew that so many money superstitions existed. This made me want to look for more.
Here are two great superstitions I found on RichMix:
If the palm of your right hand itches, you will soon be receiving some money. Don’t scratch it. If it’s your left hand, you’ll be paying out some money.
If your front door faces your back door it means money in, money out.

  • 7. Find a penny, pick it up and all day long you’ll have good luck!
…Give it away and your luck will stay!
I have never noticed whether either of these is true!
