April 15.
If you're not in the Austin area, don't despair. Chances are that some business in your area also is using April 15 as a way to get people to pay attention to its product or service by offering freebies or discounts.
Tax Day deals across the country: Last-minute Las Vegas taxpayers can enjoy free
coffee, pastries and, if they're heading to the post office to snail mail their returns, stamps.
The freebies are courtesy online shopping site
Zappos.com, based in nearby Henderson, Nev., and local retailers Grouchy John's Coffee Shop, Grouchy John's Coffee Truck and The Beat.
Hmmm. I wonder how many folks headed to Sin City after they got their tax refunds. But I digress.
Back to Tax Day giveaways: On a national level, David Muhlbaum has put together a list of Tax Day goodies for Kiplinger.com.
It's heavy (no pun intended) on deals for edible items from chain restaurants including Arby's, Boston Market, Bruegger's Bagels, California Tortilla, Chili's, Panda Express, Sonic, Great American Cookies and my personal favorite Cinnabon.
Many of those eateries also make the list compiled by Alison Barretta for dealnews.com. But Barretta also has found a few more yummy Tax Day deals at Scholtzsky's, 7-Eleven, The Melting Pot, Subway and Pinkberry.
Check the businesses' websites or Facebook pages for more information on the tax-related goodies.
Deals beyond dining: For those of you on diets, both lists also have info on some appealing non-food Tax Day deals.
HydroMassage is offering stressed taxpayers (and who isn't this time of year?) a free treatment between April 15 and April 19.
Office Depot will make you a basic copy (i.e., black and white, not color; sorry, your signature in red ink won't show up) of your 2012 tax return, up to 25 single-sided pages. If you also want to dispose of some sensitive financial information, the office supply chain will also shred up to five pounds of documents. Both offers run through May 1.
AMC Theatres locations are offering a free small popcorn with your movie as long as you buy a ticket to any showing between today, April 12 and April 15. Maybe next year the movie chain will put together an April 15 retrospective of my favorite accountant-themed or financially-focused movies.
Social video chat provider ooVoo is giving away Android cell phones as part of its "Tech Refund" promotion. Between now and April 15 visit the site to select a wireless carrier and phone model. Note that you must sign up for a new two-year contract and there are other restrictions.
Read the fine print: That caveat is a good one for all Tax Day deals (and beyond).
Make sure the above-mentioned retailers in your area are participating in the April 15 specials before you hit your neighborhood location. Also pay attention to any other limits that may apply.
Yes, it does sound a bit like some of the messy tax filing details that you have to pay attention to when completing your 1040.
But as with the hoops you jump through to cut your Internal Revenue Service bill or to get a refund, a few extra steps might just be worth taking to get these Tax Day deals.
